How can technology help address the patient discharge crisis?

The NHS is currently grappling with a significant patient discharge crisis, as one third of hospital beds are occupied by individuals who are ready for discharge. This poses a major challenge for the health and social care sector, leading to costly delays in hospital discharges amounting to £820 million annually. Prolonged hospital stays not only increase the risk of infections but also contribute to poor mental health and diminished motivation. A critical factor in this crisis, amounting to nearly a third of these delays, is the absence of an appropriate support package.

How does MiiCare address this issue?

MiiCare is leveraging its cutting-edge conversation-based AI technology ‘Monica’, to streamline the patient discharge process. By employing innovative data collection and AI analysis methods with a combination of acoustics, nearables, and medical devices, we generate health insights that were previously unavailable. These insights, combined with established clinical data sources like blood pressure and heart rate, help assess patients' overall well-being in their home environment post-discharge.

MiiCare's AI-led solution focuses on supporting older adults, aiming to reduce delays, enhance patient care, and alleviate the strain on the NHS whilst reducing costs.

Our platform offers an array of key features:

  • Automated and scheduled patient care assessments.

  • Mental health evaluations through conversations with our voice assistant Monica.

  • Intervention in case of delirium or confusion.

  • Identification of respiratory illness symptoms through vocal analysis.

  • Clinical gait analysis for frailty and fall risk assessment.

  • SOS triaging

MiiCare creates a comprehensive digital health record integrating conversations, gait data, ADLs, and vital signs, which decreases the reliance on 24-hour residential care settings for discharge. This grants ‘round-the-clock interactive virtual support for users and their families.

Our emphasis on the design process

Throughout our design process, we prioritised the input of users, placing them at the heart by incorporating their knowledge, experience, and expertise to create a solution that truly meets their needs. We collaborated with families, care providers, and doctors to ensure that each individual’s requirements were met.

After undergoing numerous trials and assessments, the MiiCare solution is now in the process of scaling up and nationwide implementation has begun. Our solutions enable a safer patient discharge process to their own homes and help to alleviate the tremendous strain on NHS operations and budgets.

With the use of AI technology, MiiCare is revolutionising the way patients are discharged from hospitals, resulting in:

  • A 65% reduction in hospital readmissions

  • A 50% reduction in welfare checks

  • £2,600 saved per fall prevented, per older adult

Believing that solutions like ours are vital for the future of healthcare, we stay committed to continuing our efforts to improve patient care and reduce costs for healthcare providers.
